Home Goods is your best friend for last minute projects!
As usual, I am excited to share a story with you all!! I am currently getting settled in with my new position as the Director of Design at Trust Homes in Chattanooga. One of my first fun projects that I have been able to be a part of is decorating the new model home in our East Haven community. Most of the furnishings had already been ordered when I started, but I was able to help purchase all remaining furnishings, accessories and wall art to complement the existing space - just anything we noticed that we needed while staging. This was a fun and challenging experience for me as decorating model homes was not a part of my former position. However, it was always something I was eager to do.
The loft was the one space that did not have any furnishing or accessories already purchased specifically for it so we had to come up with something, and we had to be able to buy things directly from the floor to complete our install. There really wasn't any category firmly set for this space to function as so we were able to just go out and see what we could find that would work. Jessica & Heather (Jessica is over marketing and was over the design department before bringing me on board so this model home is her baby) were letting me help them complete this model home. The three of us ran to Home Goods the evening of our install day to figure something out for the loft & I think that we were able to come up with a great solution with what we were able to find.
The first thing we found at Home Goods was the desk. It gave us a great place to start and was perfect actually... It has a contemporary/ industrial design which was ideal for this model home that featured industrial lighting fixtures already. We were also able to find a small furniture piece with shelves that almost looks like it was made for the desk. These two finds made it obvious that we were headed in the right direction and would be able to finish out this space that evening - hopefully.
Creating a little office space was great for the loft due to it's location in the home. It is right at the top of the stairs outside of 3 bedrooms, a bathroom, and a media room making it the perfect space for the kids to work on school work & house a computer in a common area of the home instead of a bedroom. It is good that it is semi private so you don't have to have a computer sitting in the middle of your living room. This floor plan in general sets up really well for families. I am in love with the master suite but I may write about that on a separate post. To see the floor plan for the home I am referencing follow the link here - this is the Evergreen plan.
The rest of the home already had a coastal color scheme so we definitely wanted this space to tie in. We somehow found the PERFECT wall art that was ideal for the available wall space AND fit the home's color palette. It really is shocking how something like this can come together so effortlessly.
The one thing I was set on for this space is the floor lamp. When I saw it at Home Goods, I just loved it and knew we had to have it & luckily it had a great place to set in the loft and provide an important function for this office space. Now, I know this lamp isn't anything to write home about - it is nothing super fancy, doesn't have a unique shape, etc.. I think I got excited because it is so simple and I love floor lamps in general. I don't see them utilized nearly enough. They are great for offices in place of a desk lamp since they won't crowd up your work surface. I also just love that floor lamps can be very simple like this one, but still provide a fun architectural feature to a space.
Home Goods only let us down for ONE item and that was the desk chair. They had nothing that would work with the items we were finding so I had to go out and find a chair the following day. I found the one we ended up using at TJ Maxx. It is not a comfortable office desk chair as you can see, but to me the point of the loft is to be a sit down spot for quick work, print off a document, etc. and is not meant to be a place for someone to sit all day working from home so this chair will be able to serve that purpose. However, let's be real, for a model home, its purpose is to look good and show a potential buyer what a space could be.
Here is a full list of everything photographed that was purchased on our Home Goods visit:
All 4 pieces of wall art
The other items include the chair ($49.99) I purchased at TJ Maxx the following day & some accessories that we already had.
This space was really fun to be a part of and be able to "throw together" so quickly. I think it turned out pretty awesome under the circumstances. I would love to have a loft like this in my own home - my own, one story, 1500 square foot home.... HA!
I am fond of a "no muss no fuss" style so this space really speaks to me in it's simplicity.
How do you think the space turned out?? Let me know in the comments below!! I would love to hear your feedback.
